Making Pretty Things…with Toys
I just returned from The Makers Summit, my first design and craft conference. There, I had the opportunity to speak to an expert, Bryan Martin, about establishing my creative identity. One piece of advice that I was given, was to take a look at my work (as a maker) in it’s entirety and to see what it says about me.
Today, I went through my projects and one fact that jumped out is that I love to make things out of toys. I do! I have two little boys and have dinosaurs, trucks, cars and superheros everywhere I look. I love mixing the playful nature of toys and creating them into really pretty things… that people would actually want to wear or display.
Here are some of the things that I have made out of toys.
Bottom- Star (fish) headband
Left- Dragon pin party favor
Top- Dinosaur Cufflinks
Bottom – Hat with Octopus Brooch
I love when unexpected objects become pretty and more interesting. I love metallic colors and wearing little toy creatures as accessories. I love making things with toys… and I am proud of it. The mix of fun and pretty is a big part of my creative identity. This was a fun and well needed exercise. What about you? What is your creative identity? It is worth thinking about.
